Between Our Stories Podcast - Will Vuong - Episode 4
This episode we chat with Will Vuong.
My name is Will, founder of Wellspring Counselling. I discovered a passion for working one-on-one with my clients while I was a social worker. Wellspring was started to deepen and continue my work in this area.
I was raised by refugee Chinese-Vietnamese parents who had their fair share of poverty, trauma and tragedies. Luckily, in 1979, they migrated to Australia and started their new lives. I was born and in Adelaide, South Australia, and had a comfortable start to life. However, as I grew, issues began to emerge from some unseen, potent source.
I felt deeply divided within as I attempted to navigate a dual Asian Australian identity. Intergenerational trauma, which was passed down from my parents began to affect every aspect of my life. The emotional wounds born from everyday interpersonal challenges seemed relentless.
The road to self-understanding and healing is not a clearly defined path. I journeyed into my pain and came out relatively unscathed and with stories to tell. My experience of suffering gave me the drive to map out the mysterious ‘terrain of pain’, so that I might help others find their way through.

Between Our Stories - Stevie Zhao - Episode 3
In this episode we chat with Stevie Zhao.
'Mingyu ‘Stevie’ Zhao (he/they) is Chinese-Australian multidisciplinary artist with roots in performance poetry. Stevie learnt to develop a voice to move others, after breaking free from the expressive repression of traditional Chinese culture.
After being transfixed by the works of Shane Koyzcan, Rudy Francisco, Alex Luu, and G. Yamazawa, he too has sought to present the beauty of life to others with a garnish of a call for change. His original artform was spoken word poetry. His original art practice was a combination of revisiting what life was like growing up as a Chinese boy in Australia, and exploring his cultural identity as a queer, Chinese-Australian.
As a spoken word artist, Stevie has performed for the likes of Writers SA, Context Writers Festival, Red Room Poetry, and Soul Lounge Adelaide. Making his acting debut in Soul Lounge Adelaide’s 2021 Fringe show JOURNEY, he was then taken as an understudy in Does It Please You? by Too Dumb Blondes in the 2022 Fringe season. Stevie also played the role of a Heaven’s Gate member in Wickedly Good Productions’ After All This, which concluded the 2022 Rumpus Theatre season.
Stevie now finds himself floating around different creative spaces, trying to find where he belongs.'

Between Our Stories - Samuel Lau - Episode 2
In this episode we chat with Samuel Lau.
Sam Lau is a Hong Kong-Australian actor, musician and theatre-maker working on Kaurna Land. A graduate of the Adelaide College of Arts, Sam has worked with organisations such as ActNow Theatre, OzAsia, London Artists Projects, State Theatre Company South Australia, Perform!Education, Adelaide Festival Centre and Contemporary Asian Australian Performance.
Sam is also an accomplished musician, classically trained in piano and trombone. Combining his musicianship with the theatre, Sam has both acted and performed music in various productions, and composes for theatre and short films. Melding his actor training with his musicality, Sam approaches music through the lens of storytelling, embodying a narrative, feeling or journey in his songs and compositions. Sam is also a current 2023 Interplay Artist, an Nexus Arts initiative supporting professional growth for musicians, providing tailored mentorship and industry guidance.
Sam often explores themes of diaspora in his writing and works. He is currently developing Walk of the Ancestors in partnership with Brink Productions, a theatrical work where he explores the generational stories of his family. This work has had developments in 2022 through The Mill’s Breakout Residency and Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE Development Program, and is continuing its development in 2023 through support from Arts South Australia.

Between Our Stories - Daniel Phan - Episode 1
In this episode we chat with Daniel Phan.
Dan Phan is a Chinese-Vietnamese-Australian singer-songwriter born and raised on Kaurna Land. He writes songs and music inspired by his contexts of life, faith, and ethnicity, and finds his story most easily told through a guitar accompanying his voice. Dan began his musical journey by sharing his music on YouTube and has since grown to perform at weddings and local events around Adelaide, most notably performing at OzAsia’s Lucky Dumpling Market in 2020.
In 2023, Dan was chosen as one of six artists to take part in the Interplay Development Program with Nexus Arts, providing the opportunity to collaborate with other culturally diverse artists and learn from industry professionals. Dan uses his music to explore his own story and experiences, on a path to understanding of the world around him and invites others to consider how their own story might be reflected in his music.
